App Review: Kernel Manager – Making It Easy

We had posted a few days ago about TeamWin’s incoming application Kernel Manager, a tool for easily installing custom kernels on rooted Android phones. Well, the application has been released on the Market and in my own tests, it works perfectly for what it’s designed for. Hit up after the break to check out our thoughts.

The first thing you should know is that there are two versions available on the Market, a paid and an unpaid. The paid version, Kernel Manager Pro, gets rid of the advertisements and comes with some extra features like being able to install from the SD card and being able to filter the list of kernels downloaded by various things like over-clocking ability, undervolting, etc. For the extra $3.99, I thought the extra features were worth it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, like ROM Manager, you need to be running ClockworkMod as your recovery or it will not work properly (in fact you’ll get an error if you attempt to flash without Clockwork). This being the case, an extra option to flash the Clockwork recovery via the app (like ROM Manager) would be really handy for those just getting into rooting. As far as options go, one thing that’s awesome is that in the options menu, the app gives you the choice to automatically wipe your cache and dalvik cache. In case you’re wondering, I highly recommend doing both of these for any new kernel.

Under the “More Info” button of any of the kernels, you’ll find basic information of the selected kernel, as well as a brief description of its features versus its stability. On top of this, there’s actually a rating system in place that shows you the ratings of fellow kernel flashers, as well as the option to rate a kernel yourself.

Once you’ve got the right recovery in place, (and of course, assuming your phone is rooted in the first place) flashing a new kernel is as easy as selecting the “More Info” button of your intended kernel from the main menu, and pressing the “Download + Flash Kernel” button. By default, once you download a kernel it will automatically install, but you can change this in the options menu if you wish. The app then brings your phone to the recovery, installs it, and restarts your phone for you. Smooth as butter.

If you’re an avid ROM and kernel flasher, I can’t recommend this app enough. It makes the entire process much easier, and gives a user a one stop shop for getting their kernels, instead of having to peruse any forums. At the very least, I recommend giving the app a shot. Just remember that the actual rooting process for any phone (as well as the ROM and kernel flashing) is a user choice and that TalkAndroid isn’t responsible for any voided warranties, zombie apocalypses, or ninja attacks.

Kernel Manager Pro is available on the Market for $3.99. Check it out here!
