Sony’s Official Android Honeycomb Tablet Extravaganza! Dual Screen and More…

Sony has just now announced two upcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets! We were promised these for a long time, with lots of rumors recently, with concepts and drawings flying around the blogosphere. Thankfully, our days of speculation can finally come to a rest, with the official announcement from Sony of two quality Android Honeycomb Tablet offerings, set to be launched sometime in the not too distant future.

As a leader in display business through its wonderfully designed line of Bravia HDTV’s, Sony is considered by many to produce some of the best in the biz. It’s only natural then, that the S1 tablet uses infrared technology and will work as universal remote controls for a variety of AV (Sony) devices. I can envision a future not too far from now where tablets, much like this one, are essentially living room companions. Through DLNA, the user will be able to “throw” content from the tablet to the big screen in (hopefully) an easy way. The same  will be possible for music, too, as most receivers are starting to get DLNA built into them too.  Read on to check out the specs of both.

Either way, the S1 in particular looks to be like a very attractive tablet. While crucial specs like battery and weight are unknown, we still happen to think that the S1 is one of the better looking tablets we have seen as of late.

Both the tablets are PlayStation Certified and are WiFi and 3G/4G enabled. They are expected to be available Aug-Sept. Gallery below press release.

Sony Announces Optimally Designed “Sony Tablet” with Android 3.0 that Complements Network Services for an Immersive Entertainment Experience
-Also strengthening VAIO in expanding PC markets-

Sony Corporation (“Sony”), announces “Sony Tablet” that delivers the perfect combination of hardware, content and network with seamless usability for a high-quality, engaging entertainment experience. Based on decades of engineering heritage, Sony is developing two tablets with unprecedented design, including S1 (codename) which is optimized for rich media entertainment and S2 (codename) which is ideal for mobile communication and entertainment. “Sony Tablet” will become available in the global market starting in fall 2011.

“Sony Tablet” is equipped with the latest Android 3.0 which is designed for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. Both tablets are WiFi and WAN (3G/4G) compatible and users can not only browse the internet or check e-mail but they can also smoothly access digital content including videos, games and books through Sony’s premium network services and more, on-the-go at any time.

S1 has a 9.4-inch display for enjoying the web and rich content on a large screen. Its off-center of gravity design realizes stability and ease of grip as well as a sense of stability and lightness, offering comfortable use for hours.

S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded for easy portability. In contrast to existing tablets, its unprecedented dual screen presentation and usability allows its displays to be combined and used as a large screen or for different functions such as playing video on one screen while showing control buttons on the other.

“‘Sony Tablet’ delivers an entertainment experience where users can enjoy cloud-based services on-the-go at any time. We’re aiming to create a new lifestyle by integrating consumer hardware, including ‘Sony Tablet’ with content and network,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, Corporate Executive, SVP, and Deputy President of Consumer Products & Services Group.

“Android 3.0 is a new version of the Android platform with a new holographic user interface that is designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. I’m excited about “Sony Tablet” as it will further spur the development of applications and network offerings which users are looking for.” said Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President, Mobile, Google Inc.

Also, in the mobile computing category, the market for PCs which realize high productivity is expected to steadily grow, particularly in emerging markets. Therefore, Sony will also remain committed to strengthening its VAIO brand and introduce increasingly compelling products which offer new value propositions to the market.

“Sony Tablet” features.
Designed for portability and intuitive gripping
With its off-center of gravity form factor, the 9.4-inch S1 offers stability and a sense of lightness, offering comfortable use for hours.
The dual screen S2 comes with two 5.5-inch displays which can be used together as one large screen to browse websites and more. They can also be used for different functions as users can watch a video on one screen and input commands on the other, or check email on one screen and use the other as a soft keyboard.

Seamless Usability and Performance
Through Sony’s knowhow for combining hardware and software, “Sony Tablet” realizes optimal usability and performance. Because of Sony’s rapid response technologies, users can perform smooth, quick touch-screen operations and enjoy fast and efficient website loading. The keyboard arrangement is also optimized for the large screen, making email and SNS communication a breeze.

Rich entertainment experiences through various network services
Through Qriocity1 music and video services, users can enjoy rich video and music content. Also, through PlayStation®Suite, users can immerse themselves in high quality first generation PlayStation® titles. Additionally, users can easily download ebook content from Reader™Store2 and use both tablets as digital reading devices. The integration with various services allows users to take their entertainment experiences on-the-go. Furthermore, “Sony Tablet” is equipped with functionality that organizes content for easy access.

Remote access functionality with AV devices
Through “Sony Tablet”, users can control home entertainment devices as well as enjoy content in new ways. S1 uses infrared technology and works as universal remote controls for a variety of AV devices starting with . Users can perform functions like turning on their TVs, changing the channel and adjusting the volume. Also, through DLNA functionality on “Sony Tablet”, users can “throw” personal content to large screen televisions or music to wireless speakers.

In 2010, Sony launched a network platform called “Qriocity” which connects many of Sony’s network-enabled devices, and has been expanding its services into global markets. Also, Sony Computer Entertainment has been providing various contents and services for PlayStation users through PlayStation®Network, which now has over 75 million registered accounts (as of March 20, 2011) worldwide.

Simultaneously, Sony will continue to announce various devices which leverage these services. Starting in early 2011, Sony Computer Entertainment announced the next-generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP) while Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications brought “Xperia™PLAY” to the market. Sony is introducing “Sony Tablet” to deliver an entertainment experience which integrates hardware with network services that deliver rich content.

With the establishment of Consumer Products and Services Group in April 2011, Sony will focus on accelerating the development of innovative next generation products and aim to deliver a new lifestyle by strengthening the integration of hardware and network services.

Google Talk with Video to be announced at Google I/O?

In the world of Android, rumors are our lifeline. A credible rumor in the form of a recent tweet from an individual that allegedly works for/with Samsung, claims to have tested a Nexus S handset running Android 2.3.4 and used GTalk video calling on the device. The current version of Android Gingerbread shipping with the Nexus S is Android 2.3.3.

Accurate, reasonable estimates peg total tablet sales in the range of around 50-60 million this year alone. Considering the sheer number of Honeycomb tablets set to be sold in 2011 that come with video chat capable GTalk preinstalled, we think that it is likely that Google will debut this feature for Android smartphones too. With Google I/O 2011 happening on May 10 in San Francisco, you can be sure we will bring you all the significant details on what to expect with the future of Android!

While we are as guilty as the next site in contributing to the rumor mill, we believe that there is credibility to this one.

Is video chat you something you would use on your Android smartphone?

Survey Shows Interest of Developers in Android Has Decreased

Based on a new developer survey from Appcelerator and IDC, there appears to be issues and concerns regarding the fragmentation of Android. Some developers, according to the survey, have questions about the first wave of Android tablets, and the questions are reducing the interest developers have towards Android.

The survey shows that interest in Android has decreased, although it doesn’t look as if developers are any more engrossed in third-place options after Android and iOS. Interest in Android phones has dropped 2 points down to 85%. While on the other hand, interest in Android tablets has dropped 3 points to 71% after recording a 12 point surge during the survey last January.

The question now remains – why is interest in Android waining recently? Should we take this survey as reality? Most likely, it seems that increasing concerns over fragmentation are the reason why developers lack interest in Android. 63% of developers alleged that device fragmentation was the downfall of Android. Likewise, weak initial momentum for Android tablets and the multiple Android app stores were also cited as concerns.

If we try to dig deeper, it gives us the impression that device fragmentation issues surrounding Android takes part on a grander discussion about mobile fragmentation regarding skills and OS capabilities, which are indeed greater concerns for developers.

But somehow, there’s still good news. Android still has strong interest amongst developers and other options like WP7 are not yet getting much attention. Still, I can’t give my mind a break from thinking about the future of Android. Hopefully Google will address developers’ concerns at Google I/O in a few short weeks.

Any ideas?

Android Officially Cooler than iPhone

Well Android fans – we are no longer the underdogs. It turns out that their is a new cool kid on the block. Android phones, according to a very recent Nielsen survey, are now cooler than the iPhone. Nielsen surveyed people, as their business is market research, and the results of people surveyed from January-March of this year, showed that 31% of future smartphone owners plan to buy one running Android, which has tip toed past the once great, once mighty iPhone. While the difference currently is 31% wanting an Android phone and 30% wanting an iPhone for the first time, this shift is undoubtedly part of a larger trend.

More significantly, they discovered that 50% of recent smartphone buyers purchased an Android phones, while only 25% purchased an iPhone. And, of course, Android is maintaining a healthy 37% market share in the US.

The future certainly looks bright! With 1 million daily activations likely to occur daily by 2013, how how big do you think Android will get in a few short years?

Asus Eee Pad Transformer US Release Date Confirmed

One of this years best Android Honeycomb Tablets, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (seriously, couldn’t they just call it the Asus Transformer?) has just been confirmed to be available as early as April 26th, stateside. Still, there are contradicting reports that there could be a potential delay, and that the Transformer itself might not be available until early June, according to Phandroid, but we believe this to be inaccurate, and potentially applying to the UK alone. The reasoning however, is positive in the sense that there has been an overwhelmingly great response to the Transformer itself, with it already selling out across the UK.

According to Engadget, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is the “best Honeycomb tablet yet,” and we are inclined to agree with them.

Featuring an industry leading IPS display, which offer amazing color, viewing angles, and brightness, in conjunction with a very compelling form factor that enables you to get 16 hours of battery life out of the thing – the Transformer has a lot to like. Sure, it’s not as thin as the iPad 2, admittedly, but it still has many redeeming features that set it apart from the pack.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer’s Specs:

Featuring an 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display with a dual core 1Ghz Tegra 2 SoC, early benchmarks are showing that it is also slightly faster than the Granddaddy of Android Honeycomb tablets – the Motorola Xoom. It will be offered in 16GB and 32GB variants, priced at $399.99 and $499.99 respectively. The docking station itself, which turns the device into more a content creator than consumer, as well as extends its battery life and allows the user to access full sized SD cards, will set you back $150. Initial user reports have said that its actually great to type on as well, and that the build quality is fantastic.

Either way, the good news is that if you want one as bad as we do, then you will likely be able to pick one up on Tuesday, April 26th, which means your going to have to scrounge up some dollars quick!

Finally, Toshiba’s Honeycomb Tablet is Now Official!

Last month, we saw Toshiba’s Honeycomb tablet on Amazon without any details regarding how much it would cost, when it will be launched, or its name. Now, finally, the long awaited tablet from Toshiba has been made official, complete with price tag, launch date,  and name: the Toshiba Regza AT300.

The Toshiba Regza AT300 is a strong competitor of the Motorola Xoom. The tablet is very appealing with its 10.1-inch display with a 1280×800 resolution and an “Adaptive Display” feature wherein you can have better visibility when you are in the open since it can automatically adjust its color balance in addition to brightness contingent based on ambient light. Without a doubt, the Toshiba Regza AT300 will be a powerful tablet fueled by its NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset, highlighting a twin set of Cortex-A9 cores, clocked at 1GHz. And, of course, it will be running Android’s latest version, the Honeycomb. Well, that’s sweet!

Also, Toshiba Regza AT300 will feature an internal storage of 16 GB plus a SD card slot so you can have extra storage enough room for your games and apps.

The “REGZA Apps Connect” feature will allow you to easily link the Toshiba Regza AT300 with other Regza devices such as HDTVs, laptops, smartphones and media players. Cool!

It looks like that this is good news for Toshiba lovers. However, the bad news is, it would only be released in Japan this coming June. It is still uncertain when the tablet will hit the European and US market. Toshiba only said that it would be available sometime in the first half of this year. Anyway, how is this tablet sounding so far?

Samsung Galaxy S II Coming to Canada in July!

Truth be told, and if money is no object, you could potentially have a Samsung Galaxy S II in your hand in less than two weeks, as it is going to be available via UK company Phones4U, and they will begin shipping it as early as April 27.

Still for Canadians that are happy to stick with their carriers, and waiting to upgrade their handset to what is looking to the most powerful Android superphone in the world, Mobile Syrup had the chance to quickly question a Samsung Exec on what time frame Canadians should expect:

“During the Nexus S launch event this morning I had a quick conversation with Samsung VP Paul Brennan who stated the incredibly thin Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S II will be released in Canada. They are still working our the carrier details but he’s optimistic that it’ll launch either really late Q2, but more likely early Q3 time period (definitely in time for the back-to-school time).

This puts an arrival date for the Samsung Galaxy S II at the very earliest at late June 2011, or, in all likelihood, early July 2011.

As we already mentioned, this is an absolute beast of a phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S II features an industry leading Super AMOLED Screen

The specs include the following:

Android 2.3 Gingerbread4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus displaydual-core 1.2GHz processor (reputed to be the fastest yet)1GB of RAM8.49mm thinonly 116 gramsNFC capabilities8 megapixel camera with LED flash1080p HD video recording capable of recording video at 30fps2 megapixel front facing cameraWiFi

Also check out this cool comparison of display technologies:

From Left to Right: Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, iPhone 4. The Galaxy S II's display got ranked as the best in nearly every category.

And you know what’s ironic is that the editor of the piece at Mobile Syrup that we are referencing here said that it’s looking like Canada might even get the device before the United States. For a country famous for receiving the world’s most advanced mobile tech much later than the rest of the world, this is simply hilarious. Either way, for ardent ultraphone fanatics, the device can be yours very soon if you pony up. It will be able to achieve ridiculous download speeds and is compatible with Bell, Rogers, and Telus.

Stay tuned for more! Can you wait this long?

Also, check out our Superphone comparison!

Via Mobile Syrup, thanks guys!

Sprint Smartphone Standoff! Nexus S vs. Motorola Atrix vs. HTC EVO 3D

Today, i’ll be comparing the Google Nexus S 4G vs Motorola Atrix 4G vs the HTC EVO 3D. This started out as a Pros and Cons for my own personal reference being that I’m now eligible for my 2 year upgrade pricing on my Sprint line. So take this Pros and Cons list knowing that its my opinion, and subjected to my taste in phones. But I thought you guys might like the spec and feature comparison. Also there has to be a little feature speculation in my comparison because the HTC EVO 3D’s full specs and design haven’t been fully leaked – yet. I’m leaving the newly released Kyocera Echo out of this comparison because I’m looking for a high end device that works great out of the box. The reviews of the Kyocera Echo have really shown that while it has a great design innovation, it has bugs, and is the first of its kind. Android does not run smoothly on all test units, as well as the dual screens “Simul-task” are not supported by most applications. Once you start comparing the Echos 1GHz first generation Snapdragon processor, lack of 4G WiMAX, 3.5? non SAMOLED / SLCD screens, lack of enabled multitouch in the stock Android browser and Google maps, as well as its 0.68? / 17.2 mm thickness, made it drop out of this particular running as a premium handset for me. Also, please note that I am an Android user who carries two Smartphones around on me at all times so size does play into this comparison, and with all this said I have included the dimensions and weights of the handsets side by side for easy reference.

Once you look over all the Pros and Cons of these three future handsets that are soon to be released by Sprint in the next couple months, you start to notice that my amount of Pros and lack of Cons start to lean in the HTC EVO 3D’s favor with the Motorola Atrix 4G coming in second place. What is funny though is once you put all of this in relative context as being weighed for purchase by a phone reviewer, the amount of Cons and the lack of Pros in the situation of the Google Nexus S 4G starts to take a different shape. The fact that the Nexus S is a true Google branded phone with the potential of being the first one with all the newest versions of Android, makes it, in my books, the best one to get. I can see that the HTC EVO 3D and the Motorola Atrix both have their positives and are VERY tempting.

However, for me, I believe I’ll be picking up a Google Nexus S once it is released and will have to pass on the other offerings. I’d like to be able to experience the newest versions of Android and not have to wait till the companies finally get around to adding their skin on top of the newest release.  The fact that I also have owned a Samsung Galaxy S phone in the past (T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant) and loved it, this also plays into my decision. The only things I didn’t like about the Vibrant were a lack of certain features, namely the lack of a front facing camera, and the old version of Android, at the time it had only Android 2.1.

Note to all buyers there is one annoying issue with Sprint’s 4G service, unlike T-Mobile’s HSPA+ or Verizon’s LTE network you have to toggle the 4G WiMAX antennae on to get 4G speeds. You don’t have to do this on T-Mobile’s network as their HSPA+ antennae is the antennae that is on all the time, yet it does not kill the battery quickly. Verizon’s LTE network has been known to kill the HTC Thunderbolt 4G’s battery excessively fast leading the modding community to find a way to toggle its LTE radio on and off to conserve battery power. So in some ways the Sprint WiMAX based 4G toggle system does have its benefits. But if you were considering the T-Mobile Nexus S vs Sprints Nexus S 4G, just know that is a feature you would not have to deal with on T-Mobile’s unit.

What would you pick if it were you? Did I overlook anything in my analysis of the specs and potential Pros and Cons? Let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks everybody.

Motorola Droid Bionic’s Debut Deferred

The highly anticipated Motorola Droid Bionic was one of the most cutting-edge smartphones announced at CES 2011. Originally, it was scheduled to be released on Q2 of 2011, however, its debut has been deferred as of this moment for certain reasons. According to Wall Street Journal, the company’s reason to delay the unveiling of the Droid Bionic was to make some changes and incorporate some improvements based on the feedbacks from the Consumer Electronics Show last January.

Also, there is hearsay that the reason why its debut will be delayed is because of some glitches with regard to its processor. Whatever the reason is, we don’t have a choice but to wait.

The Motorola Droid Bionic will be running soft served Android 2.2 Froyo and features 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra dual core processor that can bring the smartphone up to 2GHz of processing power, 4G LTE which is 10x faster and better than 3G, sporting a 4.3-inch qHD display, an 8 MP low-light–capable camera with HD video capabilities and a front-facing camera that will allow you to use video calling or video chat. Moreover, the Droid Bionic will be exclusively distributed by Verizon Wireless.

As of the present time, we still don’t exactly know what changes will be made on the Droid Bionic but for sure it will be all good for a better customer experience. Any thoughts? Perhaps an upgrade to compete with the almighty Samsung Galaxy S II?

Biting the Hand that Feeds? Samsung Counter Suing Apple Now

As one of the world’s leading technology companies, Samsung Electronics Co. is finally suing the company it has enjoyed a great relationship with – Apple.

According to the Guardian, “Samsung formally submitted complaints to courts in Seoul, Tokyo and Mannheim, Germany, alleging Apple infringed patents related to mobile-communications technologies, Suwon-based Samsung said in an e-mailed statement today. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, declined to comment and referred back to the company’s complaint filed last week.”

The litigation is likely to have a profound impact on the relationship between Apple and Samsung. Amid burgeoning demand for smartphones, tablets, and myriad other mobile devices, Apple’s Chief, Steve Jobs has dubbed 2011 the “Year of Copycats”.

According Chang Sea Jin, business professor at National University of Singapore, “Apple is trying to annoy Samsung – they’re throwing a ball at Samsung to keep them in check - this is strictly business. The typical way to deal with cases like this is to counter sue. It’s not between the management of Samsung and Apple, their lawyers will work it out.”

Samsung is the world’s largest maker of memory chips, and counts Apple as its second-largest customer. Maybe not the wisest move on Apple’s part, but clearly they are on the offensive, as they face pressure on multiple fronts. Still, they’ve got the high end margin game well established for the iPhone, and will retain leadership of the tablet space until 2015.

As for the changing relationship between Apple and Samsung, Chang had this to say: “Apple may try to diversify their suppliers and reduce their reliance on Samsung,”  ”but no other company has as low costs as Samsung, so Apple won’t likely drop Samsung altogether.”

According to court documents originally pulled by the Guardian, “Samsung is infringing seven patents related to the way the Galaxy devices understand user gestures, including selecting, scrolling, pinching and zooming, Apple said in its April 15 complaint. Samsung is also infringing three patents on the design, including the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad, according to Apple’s complaint. The Galaxy phones and tablet, which use Android software, were specifically designed to copy Apple products, Apple said.”

Apple is seeking a court order to block further use of its patents and trademarks, along with cash compensation and “reasonable funds for future corrective advertising.”

Samsung’s mobile-phone business “crossed the line,” Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, said this week after the company reported profit that almost doubled from a year ago.

Apple and Google are competing for supremacy in the growing market for smartphones and tablets. Google’s Android software — used by Samsung, HTC, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and other companies — will account for 39.5 percent of global smartphone shipments this year, compared with 15.7 percent for Apple, according to market research firm IDC.

The iPad will continue to dominate the tablet market until at least 2014, and potentially 2015 according to Gartner Inc.

Thoughts? Do you think Apple is in the right suing Samsung?

LG Optimus 3D Confirmed for Release on Rogers

Rogers will releasing the very powerful, and very high-end LG Optimus 3D, although it’s unfortunately not clear when the carrier plans to do it exactly. While it only has Android 2.2 on board, we have been assured of a swift upgrade.

It’s unfortunately looking that Rogers is more content on profiting of its existing line up of phones, and would rather not cannibalize its existing lineup by throwing some extremely powerful phones into the mix.

While we wish we could provide you with an exact release date, it is not exactly known. Canada has a well deserved reputation for being behind the rest of the world when it comes to receiving the most advanced mobile tech, much to the chagrin of Canadians.

As for its specs, the LG Optimus 3D has one of the most powerful processors on the market, as demonstrated by the benchmarks above. It will feature a 4.3-inch 3D LCD capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800,a dual-core 1GHz processor, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 8 GB internal storage and can hold up to 32GB with a microSD card. Further to this, it comes with two 5 megapixel cameras with autofocus, LED flash and allows you to capture and record 3D videos, 1,500 mAh battery.

Stay tuned! What do you think: Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation, LG Optimus 3D? Tough call.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Video Review

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer love keeps rolling in, and for good reason. It’s set to debut in the United States on April 26th, 2011, and we can’t wait to get one. For now, check out this great and fairly comprehensive video review done by a user that has already gotten his. Robots in disguise!

Either way, so far, this is looking like one of the most compelling Honeycomb tablets to hit the market, and is likely to steal significant market share from the Xoom. Still, the battle may be won this round, but the war is far from over. It’s going to take a long time to dethrone the mighty mighty iPad, but more competition, more choice, will increase innovation and benefit consumers all around. Plus, at $399 for the 16GB, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is getting to a price point that I think we can all be happy with.

Thoughts? Will you be picking one of these up?

Cheers to Youtube user andyxover for the great hands on!

Android on over 50% of Smartphones in 2012 – One Million Daily Activations by 2013

The Android operating system may soon own nearly 50 percent of the smartphone market, Gartner said recently.

You hear their name time and time again, but Gartner is considered by many to be the leading technology analyst firm in the world. So, we did the math.

Currently, Android is being activated on over 350,000 devices daily – a shocking number we know.

Still, according to Gartner, more than 296 million smartphones shipped last year. Out of that, here is the breakdown for 2010:

Symbian with 37.6 percent market shareAndroid’s 22.7 percent shareiPhone at 19.4 percentBlackBerry OS 16 percent

For 2012, it’s looking like a completely different story. An unbelievable amount of smartphones are likely to sell, and, undoubtedly, will be more than the world has ever see sold before. Gartner estimates that more than 630 million smartphones will ship worldwide in 2012, and Android will take control of 49.2 percent of the market, easily dominating the iPhone.

Strangely though, Gartner has publicly stated that they believe that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform will climb to the second spot in the smartphone space with 19.5 percent market share.

It looks like the party is about to begin!

Use Your EVO 4G as a Desktop Computer

You are in an Android Post

The Motorola Atrix 4G doesn't have be the only smartphone capable of converting into a desktop-like workstation, thanks to a bit of hardware and software. Industrious XDA user Lokifish Marz has come up with a way to do likewise with an EVO 4G, a keyboard and mouse, plus a fresh install of CyanogenMod 7, as seen in this video. It includes a special desktop-like web browser, keyboard mapping for all of Android's buttons, the ability to take calls over the speakerphone, and more. To get this working you're going to have to set aside a couple of hours, as the list of steps is pretty large.

T-Mobile Announces Bobsled VoIP Service

T-Mobile has kicked off its new Bobsled VoIP program today with a Facebook version for computer users, soon to be joined by apps for iPhone and Android platforms.

It's a bit odd to see a cellular carrier debut a service with a computer-only edition, rather than one on a device using its wireless network, but Bobsled is an intriguing idea that very well may take off. Bobsled integrates with Facebook, letting you voice chat with friends instead of just using text. You can also record voice messages that can be included in wall posts and left for your friends.

The real interesting bit will come when T-Mobile finally release the iPhone and Android versions of Bobsled, which could give other mobile VoIP apps a real run for their money by encouraging casual use through more of this Facebook integration. The carrier will also be using Bobsled technology for some of the features it's touted for the Sidekick 4G (arriving tomorrow), like the group-based text messaging function. T-Mobile has said that future Bobsled releases may even include video chats.

There's no ETA on the smartphone versions of Bobsled, short of "coming soon".

Sony's Crackle for iPhone Offers Free TV & Movie Streaming

Want streaming TV and movies on your iPhone but aren't exactly enamored by the subscription-supported model used by the likes of Hulu Plus? Sony's to the rescue with Crackle, giving you a new free option for access to streaming TV and movies.

The selection doesn't match what you'd get with Netflix or Hulu Plus, but it's hard to beat the price, so long as you don't mind sitting through 30-second commercials before viewing your selection. The movies and TV shows that are available through Crackle aren't the latest and greatest, but there's a solid assortment of quality entertainment to be had. Full-length movies include classics like Ghostbusters as well as more modern selections like Snatch and The Da Vinci Code. TV fans will find much-loved programs like Seinfeld, which frankly everyone could stand to watch a little more of, and the under-appreciated NewsRadio

Sony promises to keep adding new content to what's available, so that selection should only improve. Streaming is available over both WiFi and 3G connections, and the app should support any iPhone running iOS 4.0 or later. Crackle's available now as a free download in the App Store.

Sony Ericsson Looking for a Buyer? [Update]

This must be the mother of all Rumors we've recently heard! Now that we made that clear, according to Eldar Murtazin, Sony Ericsson might be looking for a buyer to take over.

Murtazin himself states it clearly that it's a rumor but he calls the sources real. Sony Ericsson has purportedly talked to companies like Siemens and BenQ for what appears to be the future of Sony Ericsson, as in selling. Sony Ericsson is a joint venture established on October 1, 2001 by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson.

Despite first quarter results for Sony Ericsson are testifying for a growth -- with a net income close to $16 million, sales have dropped considerably -- by roughly 20%. The company made bold statements about its target to dominate the US market with a total of nine Android smartphones this year and its current line-up is a great one. Totally up to you to even consider the rumor but we're curious of your thoughts.

Update: Like Andrew points it out in the comments below (thanks), Siemens and BenQ are probably not the buyers. Siemens sold its mobile division in 2005 to BenQ and most probably, on a similar note, Sony Ericsson is looking to allegedly sell its own mobile division to some Chinese company.

Skype for Android Update Fixes Issues, Adds 3G Calling

You are in an Android Post

Last week we told you about a vulnerability in the Android client of Skype that allowed other applications running on your smartphone to access data that should have been restricted. The application has now been updated to fix that vulnerability.

The new version, as of today, is number 1.0.0.983 and Android Police's Justin Case, the one discovering the vulnerability in the first place, now confirms that the issue has been fixed. Additionally, there's 3G calling in the U.S. -- finally -- since up until now, except if you were on Verizon, you could only make calls using WiFi. Motorola Android Handset Tipped for Virgin Mobile USA (Image)

You are in an Android Post

Motorola looks to be preparing an Android Froyo-powered handset for prepaid carrier and Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile USA. Although the phone resembles several of Moto's current offerings, including the Droid X, Droid 2, and Atrix, it seems to be a brand new piece of hardware. Most notable here is the fact that unlike the majority of Motorola's Android devices, this one seems to lack the Blur UI, which has come to meet with very mixed reactions. Also interesting is the fact that three columns of icons are visible on the homescreen of the likely-WVGA display, something that seems impossible on the four-column grid of stock Froyo.

The nameless model would be the third Android phone on Virgin, along with the Samsung Intercept and recently-released Optimus V from LG -- another Optimus One variant. Virgin serves a reported six million subscribers in the US as an MVNO, utilizing parent Sprint's CDMA and EV-DO networks.

Microsoft To Push WP7 Mitigation Update Via Zune

We're quite sure you're familiar with recent rumors according to which Microsoft will push a mitigation update soon -- some say May 3 -- in order to fix the Internet Explorer vulnerability due to Comodo's nine fraudulent certificates.

We (and others) thought that being a lightweight update it might be the first one Redmond would push over-the-air in the history of Windows Phone 7. Bruce Cowper, Group Manager of Microsoft?s Trustworthy Computing, confirmed to WinRumors that the update will be distributed via the Zune software, pretty much like pre-NoDo and NoDo. Additionally, the company is working with mobile carriers to plan its distribution methods so we're not quite sure how the process will go down given the history of updates going through carriers. Hopefully Microsoft and network operators can prove the world that it can be done.

iPhone 5 Ships September: Reuters

You are in an iPhone Post

Just in case you missed your daily iPhone 5 coverage (rumor, leak, etc.), Reuters says that the next generation Apple smartphone will be shipping this September after all.

Having three different anonymous sources to confirm it, Reuters says that Apple will be starting the production for the next iPhone this July or August. The smartphone will reach shelves later this year, in September. Additionally, one source said that the iPhone will be sporting a faster processor but will generally maintain the iPhone 4's outer aspect.

We've heard several rumors about the specs of the upcoming iPhone and a more powerful processor was one of those. There was a lot of buzz around a possible return to the aluminum backplate, a redesigned antenna, a larger, four-inch screen, an eight-megapixel camera and then a 12.6-megapixel one. We'll see what the real deal is whenever it comes out.

HTC Doubleshot Takes a Decent Picture (Photo)

You are in an Android Post

There's a new smartphone being developed known as the HTC Doubleshot, and it has posted a single six-megapixel photo to Picasa. According to the caption, the shot was taken in Washington, D.C. across the Potomac River towards Virginia -- it is labeled as an "HDR test." The picture seems to have been taken by an HTC employee visiting the States from overseas.

A full-size version of the photo is hotlinked here.

Various reports have the Doubleshot as a T-Mobile-bound QWERTY slider with WVGA resolution and 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Blog of Mobile!! claims that its model number is PG58100, which would mean that it's also equipped with Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, according to the respective certification bodies. Allegedly running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Doubleshot has also been benchmarked over at Smartphone Benchmarks, posting a respectable but unremarkable set of scores.

HBO Previews Upcoming HBO GO Android, iPhone Apps

You are in a Tech News Post

HBO subscribers have been patiently waiting for the company to release HBO GO apps for smartphones, with iPhone and Android versions promised for release sometime this year. There hasn't been much news in the way of progress towards their releases, short of some tangential mentions in press releases that the project was still in the works. Now HBO has published a teaser video for the apps, which may be coming as soon as May 2.

Though the video focuses mainly on the iPad version of HBO GO, we presume the most of the app's navigation will remain intact on smaller devices, with the main changes affecting screen layout. At the end of the bit, HBO flashes a "05.02.11" date onscreen, but doesn't specify just what's to happen then. Considering the multiple platforms being discussed, it's conceivable that not everything will be available all at once, though we certainly hope that at least the iPhone and Android versions will arrive that soon.

There's some more good news, in that the video confirms that streaming video won't be relegated only to use over a home WiFi connection. Though you'd want high-speed data for best image quality, the apps will support streaming over ordinary 3G connections, letting you watch HBO programming in more places than ever. There's no word on when to expect MAX GO apps for Cinemax subscribers.

Gmail Mobile Web App Adds Undo for Certain Actions

You are in a Tech News Post

Google has updated the Gmail Mobile Web App by adding a convenient Undo action with which you can spare some time and shave off a few steps to revert to the previous state in some cases.

With the new Undo action you can take back archiving, deleting, adding or removing a label as well as moving a message or a conversation. Previously you had to go through multiple steps in order to take these actions back but now the Undo command will make it easier and quicker. Whenever you take one of the above actions, Google Mail will display the Undo command which will remain displayed even if you move to another screen. These improvements are available when viewing Gmail on an Android, iOS, and BlackBerry OS 6.0 smartphone.

AT&T NoDo Update Disabling Samsung Focus HSUPA? Fix It!

You are in a Windows Phone Post

AT&T sure seems to have a love/hate relationship with HSUPA. It's got no problem boasting about how fast its network is, but try to find a phone that can take advantage of high-speed uploads, and you'll rapidly find your choices shut-out - unless you want an iPhone, that is. Windows Phone 7 users who have configured their phones to use HSUPA and have just installed the new NoDo update may be noticing slower speeds, as the patch is apparently setting the devices to HSDPA-only.

Samsung Focus users can pretty easily set their smartphones to start employing HSUPA again, following these steps:

? From the number-dial screen:
? Enter ##634#
? Diagnostics screen should open.
? Enter *#32489#
? Test mode screen should open.
? Press back at the bottom. (bottom right, not the phone's back button)
? Press 5 for RRC (HSPA) control.
? Press 1 to view what yours is set at.
? Press 2 to change it.
? Press 3 to change to Release 6 HSDPA/HSUPA.
? Press to confirm.

If only things were so easy for the company's "4G" Android lineup!

Apple Likely Tweaking App Store Ranking System

You are in an iPhone Post

Developers for the iPhone have noticed a shift over the past week in how Apple is computing app rankings in the App Store. The company hasn't publicly revealed what's changed, but the huge climbs some well-established apps have made, and the corresponding drops, suggest that an important part of Apple's ranking algorithm has been modified, and there are few theories out now as to just what's going on.

The most plausible explanation is that, rather than going by downloads alone, Apple's now considering how much use apps get post-install. This could explain the sudden rise in the rankings of apps like Netflix, which wouldn't get as many downloads as apps that don't require a subscription to use, but sees its share of heavy use from those who do install it, month after month.

Apple's doing more to curb the influence of sheer number of downloads alone, as it's no longer approving apps featuring "offer walls" which encourage users of one app to download another in order to receive some sort of in-app bonus. The company has been responding to developers submitting such apps with rejection notices explaining that it doesn't want apps that try to exert "excessive influence in the listing order or ranking on the App Store". The message is clear: an app should rise to a high rank by being a quality title that gets used over and over again, not by being a throw-away app that's only installed to unlock a reward.
